Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition was launched during Xiaomi’s 8th-year-anniversary event in China alongside the Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes with advanced features, groundbreaking in-display fingerprint scanning technology and a premium looking body.
Its see-through back panel is one of the highlights of the device, coupled with the under-screen fingerprint scanner. These features make the Mi 8 Explorer Edition more technologically advanced than the Mi 8. Let’s not forget its massive 8GB of RAM, which is more than perfect for heavy users.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Design
At first glance, you’ll notice the transparent back, which reveals the powerful Snapdragon 845 chipset working underneath. This see-through back panel makes the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition a more premium and sleek device. There’s no fingerprint scanner at the back, it has been moved to the screen.
The dual rear camera is still in a vertical position with the dual-LED flash in-between. A Corning Gorilla Glass 5 offers protection at the back, even though it doesn’t support wireless charging or water resistant. It measures 7.6mm in thickness and weighs 177g over, it’s available in only Black.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Display
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition spots the trending notched screen as well, the notch houses the infrared lens and light for 3D face recognition. You can also send Animoji to friends with the infrared lens just like on the iPhone X. Other features on the notch include the proximity sensor, earpiece and selfie camera.
Displaying stunning colours is the 6.21-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, it has 1440 x 2248 pixels in resolution and 403 pixels per inch density for outstanding visuals. The screen stretches up to 83.8% screen-to-body ratio, with an HDR10 complaint, DCI-P3 colour gamut and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top as well.
Hardware and Software
Qualcomm’s most powerful chip, the Snapdragon 845 is in charge here with its 8-core processor and 64-bit CPU architecture. The octa-core processor here reaches a blazing speed of 2.8GHz with 10nm FinFET+ process technology, offering smooth performance. In the graphics department, Adreno 630 from Qualcomm does its job.
There’s only one variant in terms of RAM and storage, there’s 8GB for everything multitasking with a memory speed of 1.8GHz. While 128GB is absolutely ready to store all your files and apps, however, the storage can’t be upgraded further. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the new MIUI 10 which was unveiled at the event as well.
Camera and Battery
The same powerful dual 12MP + 12MP shooters on the Mi 8, made its way to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition as well. The first 12MP shooter on top is an IMX363 Sony powered sensor with f/1.8 aperture, 1.4µm pixel size, 4-axis OIS and dual-pixel PDAF. The second 12MP S5K3M3 telephoto camera from Samsung has f/2.4 aperture and brings AI features enhancement for over 200 scenes.
Features on the cameras include 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, dual-tone LED flash, Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama, 4-in-1 pixel binning and other features. It shoots videos of 2160p@60fps, 1080p@30/240fps. The 20MP rear shooter has f/2.0 aperture, 1.8µm pixel size and AI beautify and portrait settings.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 3000mAh battery with fast charging technology. Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is available on shopping stores, starting from $599 to $649, that’s about (N200,000 – N220,000).
