Sony has just launched two new smartphones in India, the Xperia R1 and the Xperia R1 Plus. These new devices are compact and budget-friendly, so the average person can now afford a Sony Xperia smartphone.

According to Sony, the smartphone which was launched in India was designed mainly for the Indian average lifestyle and to excite the new Indian population.

The Xperia R1 has a 5.2-inch same as the Xperia R1 Plus. Most “Plus” devices are equipped with bigger screens. But I’m guessing Sony might have skipped that part. The two device both have a TFT LCD screen with 720p resolution.

Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with 3GB of RAM for R1 Plus and 2GB of RAM for R1. The R1 also features 16GB of expandable storage while the R1 Plus packs 32GB.

In terms of imaging, I was expecting more pixels on the camera though. With 13MP camera at the back paired with Sony’s Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, which Sony claims uses object tracking and motion prediction to completely focus on moving objects you want to capture. Then there’s a 8MP selfie camera. I’m a little disappointed, but considering the fact that its a midrange device, it’s not that bad.

It comes with 2,620mAh battery, dual SIM support, USB-C connectivity and Android 7.1 Nougat.

The only major difference between the Sony Xperia R1 and R1 Plus is the RAM and internal storage.

The Sony Xperia R1 is available for just INR 13,990 ($215) and the Xperia R1 Plus goes for INR 15,990 ($245). Both smartphones will only be available in Black and Silver colours.
