The Sony Xperia XZ2 was launched as Sony’s flagship device at the 2018 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Like every other flagship coming out this year, it houses Qualcomm’s best chipset yet, the Snapdragon 845 and runs on Android 8.0 Oreo.
That’s not all, the IP68 certified smartphone boasts of 4GB RAM, 64GB storage among other features. It also looks like Sony isn’t interested in the trending dual rear camera feature as well. Without further ado, let’s have a thorough review of the Sony Xperia XZ2.
Just like their other smartphones these past couples of years, the Sony Xperia XZ2 is IP68 certified offer water and dust resistance. The glass covering the Aluminium Alloy overall body is shatterproof as well, finally a smartphone with a glass back that isn’t fragile.
The rear camera is almost in the middle of the phone, talk about being unique. The dual-LED flash is now on top of the camera in a unique twist, while the fingerprint scanner is underneath.
But disappointingly, it measures 11.1 mm by the side which is very bulky for a flagship. It’s also heavy, weighing 198g and available in many beautiful colours like Deep Green, Ash Pink, Liquid Black and Liquid Silver.
I don’t think I can call this a bezel-less smartphone but the screen go to 76.1% screen to body ratio. It’s impressive nonetheless but that’s below what we expect from a flagship device in 2018, the bezels need to go.
Focusing on the screen now, the 5.7-inch FHD+ IPS LCD Capacitive touchscreen boasts of 2160 x 1080 pixels in resolution. Details on the screen should come out clear and crystal sharp with 424 pixels per inch density.
There’s a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protecting the screen offering scratch resistant, it supports Dolby Vision, Triluminos Display and X-Reality Engine as well.
HARDWARE and SOFTWARE
Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 MSM8998 chip with Octa-core processor. The processor reaches a clock speed of 2.7 GHz for fast performance with 64-bit CPU architecture. It has a 10nm FinFET LPP process technology and Qualcomm Adreno 630 graphics processor.
When most flagships are coming with 6GB RAM, Sony went with just 4GB of RAM for the Xperia XZ2 smartphone. Nevertheless, it reaches a memory speed of 1866 MHz for smooth multitasking and app launching. It comes with 64GB storage space which is upgradeable up to 400GB using a memory card.
Only a single rear shooter is visible here, the 19MP camera can effectively do the job of two. It has a f/2.0 aperture and 1.22 um pixel size capturing 5K resolution images. On top of the camera is a dual-LED flash ready to help out in dark places and low light environments. There’s a 5MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture for cute selfies.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 is powered by a Non-Removable Li-Ion 3180mAh battery. It comes with the fast charging feature and Qi wireless charging as well.
