Huawei Announces 7nm HiSilicon Kirin 810 Chipset

Huawei, today, unveiled Kirin 810 SoC, which is a mid-range chip that is based on the 7nm manufacturing node — the same process as that of its flagship Kirin 980. The latest release is also the only mid-range SoC that features 7nm manufacturing process, though a couple of Qualcomm chipsets come close at 8nm.

The SoC has an octa-core CPU along with a Mali-G52 MP6 GPU, with the CPU comprising 2 high-performance ARM Cortex-A76 cores providing a maximum clock speed of 2.27GHz. There are also 6 smaller ARM Cortex-A55 cores that are clocked at 1.88GHz.

As regards the GPU, there will be about 162 per cent better performance, Huawei says, over the previous generation that is featured in the Kirin 710.

How does the Kirin 810 processor fare against Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, its rival? The Kirin 810 is equipped with 11 per cent better single-core and 13 percent higher multi-core performance. Concerning the GPU, the Mali-G52 MP6 is expected to put up an improved performance in comparison with the Adreno 618 in the SD730 with as much as 44 per cent higher frame rates.

The hidden weapon the Kirin 810 chipset has is the DaVinci NPU, which is based on the Rubik’s Cube Quantitative Stereo Arithmetic Unit that can outperform Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 & MediaTek Helio P90 in tasks that have to do with AI.

The NPU has been set to work in other areas, too. It should help the CPU, GPU, as well as memory, in communicating faster, in running more efficiently. This capability will bring stable performance for longer periods of time. The AI system predicts GPU overload and controls frequency, accordingly. The system equally tracks frame rates, fluency & touch screen input changes — all in real time.

It is expected that the newly launched SoC will power the just unveiled Huawei Nova 5 and will ultimately feature in other mid-tier Huawei as well as Honor mobile phones.
