The wait is finally over for the 2021 iPhone 13 series as the Cupertino company releases the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13. As expected, there weren’t many changes to the iPhone’s body build and design – rounder corners and flat edges coupled with an IP68-rated metal body. One of the few changes is the notch which got smaller by 20%.
The iPhone 13 mini is built around a 5.4″ Super Retina XDR panel while the iPhone 13 sports a 6.1″ panel. The display features a max 800nits brightness and a 1200nits peak HDR brightness. The Super Retina XDR panel supports HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG standards. Buying the vanilla iPhone 13 or the mini means you’re stuck with a 60Hz refresh rate. The much anticipated 120Hz refresh rate is reserved for the Pro models – iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
Powering the iPhone 13 and 13 mini is the new Apple A15 Bionic chipset which is the fastest chipset in any “current” smartphone according to Apple. The GPU features four cores as opposed to the five cores that are available in the Pro models.
Moving to the camera, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini-feature two cameras on their backs – the main one has a 12MP sensor with f/1.6 aperture while the secondary has a 12MP ultrawide sensor with f/2.4 aperture but no autofocus like on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. On the front side, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini uses a 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera which supports the increasingly popular Centre Stage feature to follow you around in the frame automatically and also accommodate more people.
Speaking of battery life, Apple did not reveal any specifics but promised up to 2.5 hours and 1.5 hours of extra time on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini respectively compared to their predecessors.
The iPhone duo will be available for pre-order starting September 17, 2021, in over 30 countries including the UK, the US, Japan, India, Germany, China, Canada, and Australia. Shipping starts on September 24.
The base storage for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini is 128GB with 256GB and 512GB also available. The iPhone 13 mini pricing starts at $699 while the iPhone 13 starts at $799. The duo will have five body colour options – Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Red Edition.
