Samsung Mobile held its unpacked event for 2021 today and as many people expected, the company unveiled its foldable flagship Galaxy Z Fold3. The third-generation foldable smartphone debuts with an IPX8 water resistance rating and support for the Stylus Pen which is an improvement over its second-generation Galaxy Z fold.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 sports a 7.6” Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate from its predecessor. This time around, the selfie camera is located under the device’s display instead of being behind a punch-hole. The Z Fold3 becomes the first Samsung phone to feature the UD (under-display) camera. The selfie camera which is under the display has a 4MP resolution but with a large 2.0µm pixels and f/1.8 aperture. The UD camera is intended for video calls as there is another 10MP f/2.2 selfie camera in a punch-hole on the cover screen. You can take selfies using the main camera of the Galaxy Z Fold3.
On the cover screen, there is a 6.2″ diagonal display with 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass Victus protection. Underneath the Galaxy Z Fold3 is the Snapdragon 888 chip built on 5nm manufacturing process technology. The chip offers both Sub6 and mmWave 5G support and is paired with 12GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. Software-wise, the Galaxy fold device runs on Android 11 OS with One UI overlay.
The main camera setup of the Z Fold3 consists of a 12MP main sensor with f/1.8 lens, Dual Pixel AF & OIS, a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide sensor with 1.12µm pixels, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto sensor with OIS, 1.0µm pixels & 2x zoom. Battery-wise, the Samsung foldable phone packs a 4,400 mAh capacity which is 100 mAh less than what is featured on its predecessor (Galaxy Fold2). Regardless, the Fold3 supports a 25W wired fast charging speed, 11W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging capabilities. According to Samsung, the stylus pen (called S-Pen Fold Edition) is crafted precisely for the needs of the Z Fold3. Buyers get to choose between the S-Pen Fold Edition and the S-Pen Pro. The Fold Edition is smaller and lacks Bluetooth but makes up for that with Air Commands support. There is no slot for either s-pen on the Z Fold3, so buyers will need to get its special case.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is available in three different body colors – Phantom Silver, Phantom Green, and Phantom Black. The storage options are 256GB and 512GB. Starting price for the foldable smartphone in Europe is set at £1,599 and €1,799 with sales to commence on August 27 while pre-orders are already open.
