MediaTek Helio G90 Series vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 730

MediaTek, on Tuesday, launched Helio G90 and Helio G90T in India. Under the Helio G series, the manufacturer has introduced the 2 new chipsets, specifically built for gaming purposes. Though both chipsets are mid-rangers, MediaTek Helio G90T is the slightly higher variant of the 2.

They’re designed to slug it out with Snapdragon 730 & 730G — 2 recently launched chipsets from American rival Qualcomm. While the MediaTek Helio G90 will compete directly with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, the Helio G90T will battle the Snapdragon 730G.

Our focus, in today’s comparison review, is on MediaTek Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730. Let’s see which of the 2 chipsets delivers faster and more powerful performance, especially in these key areas; manufacturing process, CPU, GPU, camera, AI capabilities, RAM & storage, display, and modem/speed.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730: Manufacturing Process

While MediaTek Helio G90 works on the 12nm manufacturing process, Snapdragon 730 works on the 8nm manufacturing process. Since a difference of 4nm exists between the 2 processors, Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 offers higher power efficiency than its rival.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730: CPU and GPU

In the CPU department, the Helio G90 features an Octa-Core CPU, which is based on 64-bit architecture. The chip comes with 2+6 CPU Configuration. The first 2 Cortex-A76 big cores have a clock speed of 2GHz, and the other 6 Cortex-A55 small cores run at 2GHz.

As for Snapdragon 730, it equally features 64-bit Octa-Core CPU, including 2+6 Configuration with Kryo 470 Cores. The Kryo 470 Cores contain 2 Cortex-A76 Gold Cores, which have a clock speed of 2.2GHz while the other 6 Cortex-A55 Silver Cores operate at 1.8GHz. In this case, the speed of the first 2 powerful cores (of Snapdragon 730) is higher than that of the Helio G90, while the other 6 small cores (of Helio G90) run at a higher frequency than those in the other chip.

Concerning GPU, Snapdragon 730 is built with Adreno 618 GPU that operates at 500MHz. It’s an upgrade over all previous GPUs in the Adreno 600 series.

The GPU MediaTek Helio G90 features better a GPU, which is ARM’s Mali G76 MP4 GPU, clocked at 720MHz. As the Helio G90 is a gaming-centric processor, it is not surprising that it has a better GPU. Thus, as regards gaming and other graphical tasks, it is leading the Snapdragon 730.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730: Camera Support

With respect to camera support, the Snapdragon 730 offers Spectra 350 Image ISP that’s a 14-bit 2x Image Signal Processor. The chipset provides support for a dual camera that has up to 22MP at 30fps MFNR & ZSL.

Concerning a single cam, it has the capability to support as much as a 36MP single camera sensor at 30fps with MFNR & ZSL. But with only MFNR, it can support up to 48-MP cam sensor, and 192-MP cam sensor without MFNR & ZSL.

The MediaTek Helio G90, on the other hand, provides support for as much as 48-MP single cam sensor, and dual cam up to 24MP & 16MP.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon: Display

In terms of display support, the MediaTek Helio G90 gets support for 60Hz 21:9 Full HD Plus display, which supplies a maximum resolution that is as much as 2400 by 1080 pixels. Snapdragon 730, however, supports up to FHD+ displays that offer a maximum resolution, which is as much as 2520 by 1080 pixels.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon: RAM & Storage

As for RAM support, the Helio G90 comes with support for LPDDR4X RAM as much as 8GB, which runs at 2133MHz while the Snapdragon 730 has the capability to support LPDDR4X RAM up to 8GB as well. The 2 chipsets support UFS 2.1 as well as eMMC 5.1 storage types.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730: AI Capabilities

AI name is only offered in recent chipset launches from MediaTek. And Helio P60, which is the most successful chipset, features dedicated APU in mid-range. After that, the Helio P90 has APU 2.0, designed for best performance as far as AI is concerned.

No information is available on the AI performance of Helio G90 or G90T. All we know is, the Helio G90 brings 2x MediaTek APU, which works at 750MHz.

Snapdragon 730 is built with Hexagon 688 DSP, allowing it to handle all AI tasks. It’s a 4th-Gen AI Engine from San Diego, California-based Qualcomm.

Helio G90 vs. Snapdragon 730: Connectivity

Focusing on connectivity, the 730 has Snapdragon X15 LTE modem that makes use of LTE Category 15, offering a download speed of as much as 800Mbps, in addition to LTE Category 13, providing an upload speed of as much as 150Mbps. Also, it comes with features, like Dual VoLTE, VoWiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, Dual-band WiFi, NFC, FM Radio, GPS, USB-C, USB 3.1, and others.

As for its counterpart, the MediaTek Helio G90, it has Cat.12 LTE Modem for download as well as Cat.13 for upload, with the maximum download and upload speeds of 800Mbps and 150Mbps, respectively. Other connectivity features of the Helio G90 include the following: Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, Wi-Fi 5, FM Radio, and so on.
