Qualcomm Launches Quick Charge 5 with 100W Charging Speed

American chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the Quick Charge 5 with the world’s first commercial 100W+ charging platform. According to the company, it is 70% more efficient than its predecessor and can arguably take a device from 0% to 50% within five minutes.

To support such unparalleled efficiency and extend battery life cycle, the Quick Charge 5 uses Qualcomm’s Battery Saver and a new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology.

Charging of phones at a rapid rate like 100W has its own danger and the company is certainly aware of that. This is why they have a variety of safety measures in place like the incorporation of 12 separate voltage, external power controls beyond 30V, USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V, current and temperature protection and running on 10°C which is said to be cooler than the Quick Charge 4.

To achieve optimal performance with the charging technology, Qualcomm is introducing the next and newest generation of premium tier power management ICs (PMIC). They are the Qualcomm SMB1396 and Qualcomm SMB1398. The PMICs supports 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, an adaptive operation based on the power source (3 level buck and DIV/2), wired and wireless input paths, and scalability (primary and secondary to provide higher power). All these ensure they provide maximum efficiency above 98%.

The Quick Charge 5 is backwards compatible with Quick Charge 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 4+ which is definitely huge. It is also optimized to work with both Type-C and USB-PD technologies.

The charging technology is expected to hit the market inside devices in Q3 2020. It is supported on the Snapdragon 865 and 865+ chipset and expected to feature in future high-end tier Snapdragon chipset.
